Let's just call me HUNTERESS THOMPSON. (See what I did there?) |
In my subbing role on MOJO Magazine, it is often debated as to whether a band known to the world as a “The” band is officially a “The” band. This usually involves checking sleeves of albums and discographies. Today’s challenge has concerned The Smashing Pumpkins. The debate about whether the article “the” is captialised in the name Smashing Pumpkins is, I believe, my MOJO-iest career moment yet…
Production Editor: “It depends. They didn’t use it for the first two albums. Then it appeared on Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness. Now they seem to have dropped it again.”
Me: “How inconsistent…”
Production Editor: “I suppose, Eve… you have to ask yourself what they intended for the “Pumpkins” they speak of. Did they intend Smashing as a verb – so Billy etc are smashing the Pumpkins physically – or, did they intend the word Smashing to describe the Pumpkins – as in Billy’s Pumpkins are truly superb?”
Me: “Yeah… I’ve never thought about it like that before.”
