Don’t Think
Director: Adam Smith
Starring: Tom Rowlands, Ed Simons
Not long into Don’t Think – a Chemical Brothers film – will viewers resemble Steve Carell in Anchorman, verbally challenged by the experience: “LOUD! NOISES!” The superstar DJs alongside Adam Smith are unparalleled deliverers of big beat electronica and jaw-dropping light shows. Anyone who doesn’t have epilepsy knows this. Innovatively shot, it’s neither a documentary, nor an extended flashmob advert. It’s a front seat, eye-widening, gurn-tastic ticket to their Fuji Rock show complete with camera shake, crowd hilarity, intimacy, fear, love and – above all – chemicals. This visceral ride captures the hands-aloft essence of live dance without the standing outside in the mud, reducing audiences to moths gliding towards mesmerising visuals; the euphoria building to such crescendo the screen no longer acts as a barrier. The sensory overload would only increase if your popcorn were laced with MDMA; you literally feel the noise. It’s remarkable that without saying a word, Don’t Think speaks volumes.
